I had the
privilege to play banjo with the late Tom Hobson and his band "Ragged but
Right" from 1977 to 1981 in San Francisco. Tom was an old family friend as he had been a music teacher to both me and my brother when we were children. Performing with Tom was a real education in music history, he had a repertoire of over 500 songs! Our band was considered Bluegrass by instrumentation but we often played swing, jazz, blues and Tom's favorite; "Tin Pan Alley" music of the 30s. Our venues were basically wherever we could get a gig. Most often we played at coffee shops, neighborhood bars, gay bars & private parties. This CD is of a recording I made at "The Sound Track" in San Francisco back in January 1979. This "set" was an audition during the early afternoon when few patrons were present which made for an opportunity to record the band without a lot of background noise that was so common with gigs of this type. These 17 songs feature a fair cross section of the variety of styles represented in our performances. This old mono tape has be cleaned up and enhanced for audio clarity by CustomAudioCDs.com and Tom's voice is clear for your enjoyment. The album features Tom Hobson on vocals & guitar, his wife Barbara plays mandolin & sings, Kilo Van der Wyk plays bass & sings and Eric Van der Wyk plays electric banjo. Enjoy! |
